I should have my interview with Wayne Allen Root up shortly; we created it in the form of a podcast from the tricked-out booth the media experts installed at CLC.

I'm actually very impressed with Root, and this fact surprised me just a little. After all, I can be a bit cynical about candidates for parties that may draw some support away from the GOP. On the other hand, the GOP and the Dems both suck so much right now that the more pressure they respectively experience to adhere to their ideals, the better.

I related to Root a lot more than I expected: after all, his background is in sports, and I am famously missing the "sports neuron" that causes people to yell at their television sets. But how could I not fall for a good-looking Libertarian businessman who is committed to the War on Terror and the U.S.'s alliance with Israel? He also has great teeth, and he bills himself as "a New York Jew, and a Las Vegas gambler." Perfect.

My broadcasting skills leave something to be desired, but I'm certainly aware of what the sticking points are between social conservatives/terror hawks and Libertarians (and "small l's, such as myself), so I asked most of the right questions—even if I stuttered and stammered a bit. (I may have to take a broadcasting course. After all, the solution to bad podcasting is more podcasting.)

And I have a few hours left here in Reno before it's time to crash early; I'll be hitting the road tomorrow at an indecent, un-Joylike hour, and I still have a little bit of "real work" to do for two clients before I crash.

The last attendees and organizations are filtering away from the CLC, aka "Rightoberfest," as I write this. The conference is small, but it has more of a Libertarian orientation than any other convention I've covered as a blogger. An offshoot of "Blogging Man," it's very well-organized. Obviously, I think the GOP ignores the voices of Libertarians/libertarians at its peril, so I'm hoping this particular event grows next year.

I certainly suspect that I'll be here for the whole conference in 2008, rather than just driving down on Friday night! (My drive up here from L.A. is, as they say, a long, sad tale. I selected an inefficient route up here, and I blame either my father or the Jews—I haven't decided which quite yet.)

They have an amazing collection of speakers lined up; it's going to be very cool.

The organizers of this year's inaugeral premier conservative conference are holding a contest that I intend to win—due to the fact that I am the most deserving person, and haven't divested myself entirely of my early-twenties socialist leanings. Also: I'll be the cutest person there, even at the ripe old age of 45. So I basically have it sewn up. That will get me into the event in style, and even pay for my room. Furthermore, I'd get 20 minutes with the keynote speaker. If it's Newt, I'll have some fun questions for him!

The Conservative Leadership Conference takes place this fall, October 11-13th, in the fabulous city of Reno—which, as most of you know, is Nevada's answer to Lake Tahoe, California. Nevada, of course, bills itself as "the last free state," and in a number of ways that's absolutely correct. The beautiful thing about this conference is that it openly welcomes libertarians, so we won't have to skulk around in our camouflage clothing like we do at CPAC. (Did anyone get that on video, BTW? I looked like I was on a deer hunt, and not just because I was lugging a .30-06 around with me.)

If you want to be a total running dog and enter the contest as well, I guess I can't stop you—though I was thinking that since I'm clearly the cutest/most deserving blogger, it would be best if only I entered. That way, the drawing would be . . . easier on the organizers. Simpler.

The entire event is sponsored by the New Media Alliance, and co-sponsored by GOP USA, Townhall, and Americans for Tax Reform. So far.

I'll see you there. After all, Reno is a gambling town, and I'm a very lucky person.

UPDATE: I hear that the Grand Prize may be reformatted a bit, in which case I would only get free premium admission to the event—along with a few other people (almost) as lucky as I am. That's fine, too. After all, I like to share my good fortune with the downtrodden.

1 Nevada is quickly losing its "last free state" feel, thanks to the influx of Liberal Californians (we understand the Conservative/Libertarian invasion). They just shot down smoking in bars here in Nevada, which is something we NEVER thought would happen. But, fortunately, 90 year old grandmas still sleep with sawed off shotguns under their pillows. 2 If you're sitting at a machine or game table you're fine, but the second you step into an area where children "could" be found, you'll find yourself in the middle of an anti-smoke swarm. It really has gone downhill. Last month I bought a cigar outside one of my favorite bars, Brews Brothers in the Silver Legacy Casino. The cigar stand is directly outside the door of the brewery so one would think, common sense of course, that you could light up and walk right in. But no, the brewery serves food, and there for is now a non-freedom environment. I made my way to the bar and before the word beer could even slip out of my mouth I had three employee's pulling on my coat. One even reached for my smoke, which was almost impossible to accept as reality. Free country my ass... -Eric Odom CLC Director
