Um. Big News.
There are egregious levels of anti-Semitism in the Middle East, and children are being immersed in it, practically from birth.
No, really.

C'mon, Hillary! Have some self-respect! You're losing to Obama, but there's no need to resort to that! Yet.

The Chicago media said there was so much love for Rev. Wright last night at the support rally that it couldn't have come from hate. Guess those millions seen in those old newsreels of Hitler's rallies must have been there to catch the Zahl-Fünf--Bus to Tauentzienstrasse.
MSP works, Hillary. And it gives you some wiggle room for those master/mistress variances. After all, we must target our audiences. Happy spamming, silly girl!

So you were thinking it would be interesting to vote for a Democrat, huh? How long has it been, you silly boy?
That long?
[Conspiratorially] No one needs to know, Dear. That's the beauty of the polling booth. Did you know that girls whose legs are large often have very flat tummies?

We've all been lured to the dark side, I'm sad to say. I did vote for that peanut guy you ran in 1976. I thought, "How bad can an engineer be?" until I learned the answer. Who knew he couldn't delegate? What kind of putz tries to make EVERY decision on his own? Even going so far as to set the price for admission to National Parks. Or decide on the number of helicopters needed for a particular military operation. He did manage to stock the State Department, the judiciary, and all government agencies with all those good Democratic aparachiks, though. And I didn't even know how many of those jobs would open up during his term due to retirements! But you know all about that! They came up again during your terms in the White House, didn't they? If only the people knew! If only we had a media to tell them! Yes, that media that turned on you after the pledged their immortal souls. Ungrateful buggers! Now even Mo Dowd is nipping at your full, firm ankles! You should take her into your secret room for a few days serious attitude adjustment. The place where her screams would only reach your ears and the quivers of every muscle in her body could only be recorded by your brain cells. No pictures there!
I'll click your links, silly, silly, Queen of Spam! And I'll even help you fulfill your destiny to rule with an iron fist. Barack Obama? Silly, ungrateful man. Like he didn't know that it was your turn to shine! Glad you pointed out that he had POTUS ambitions since he was five years old! Silly pretender! You were BORN to rule! Can't silly people in this country see the difference? If you could only take them all into your secret room . . .
Call? I'll scream. But only if you allow it, Mistress, of course.

Who Knew They Had New York Money People in the Middle East?
Laurence seems
tense. Are all the New York Money People in Texas like that?
It seems like some people want to ethnically cleanse the planet of New York Money People, and there's tremendous overreaction to that in some quarters.
Perhaps instead of ethnically cleansing them, we could simply send them back where they came from.

The Jewish Lobby.
Is that, like, a hotel lobby, or one at a doctor's office? And is it decorated in an early 20th Century style, or is it more Middle Eastern?
Just curious.

Too Late, Mr. Auden. Mr. Kipling. Mr. Gibson.
Time that with this strange excuse
Pardoned Kipling and his views,
And will pardon Paul Claudel,
Pardons him for writing well.

Attila the Hub on Mel Gibson
"It has to be mortifying for a man to publicly apologize for having gotten drunk and said things that made him sound like Al Sharpton sounds sober."
Yes. And I admire Gibson for his public statement: he's acting like a stand-up guy.
The bulk of this issue is between him and his family. But he let his fans down, too. So in my own small way I can forgive. I cannot forget, though. I'll never forget.

from working in the prison system, and having to grow up as a daughter of a hater alcoholic cop, i believe everybody had some kinda hate literally pounded into them from an early age, especially if u were poor. and , if u were white, well, the rest of the world just assumed u had it made. sometimes that old outdated shit might come out in a black-out stage, after we've already figured life ain't worth living nomore

we know better, after getting out from under, and seeing people that were depicted as being "less worthy" somehow, having nice cars w/rims, nice homes; keep their yards better than anybody else, compete for sharpest house and lawn in neighborhood. feels good, what i got oppressed by, seeing just the oppoisite. as baby girl was told she couldn't be as good as the boys, no matter how smart & hard working. u know mel; u were just blacked out and a little bit lost, temporarily; that's all. u just was experiencing the old poison temporarily.

blacks and jews; a must have.
if u want to know what the LATEST style is, look at videos about what the blacks were doing 2 or 3 yrs ago.
if u want solid financial wisdom, to REALLY take care of your family, look at what the jews in this country have been doing since they've been here.
to my poor white disadvantage, our schools have taught me to work hard and sweat for somebody else; not ever knowing what CAN be.
u can lose your ass in business; and eventually suceed in this country. blacks and jews r all foreignors; however, so am i. i've learned more from african co-workers than was ever taught to me in college; it's not complicated.

these folkes come here w/a different perception, desperation, to take care of 6 wives at home, to be a symbol, their household to be a symbol, of respect, to a good man. different kind of world. i respect that, even though it's different.
blacks in this country are only united on a superficial front; theY're black.
the jews, however, deal with their daily lives in SUPPORT OF. their fellow jews; who can blame them; that's how PIKESVILLE, MD. TOOK IT'S ROOT. black's don't trust each other. they explain to me how; they gotta start being more like the jews, period.

I relate to that idea of people assuming you have money because you're white . . .
I think every group in this country--from the natives to the various strands of Europeans (including Jews) to blacks have brought something to the party.
We can all learn from each other, ya know?

Sorry, Mel.
I know alcohol and testosterone are a potent combination, but the antisemitism had to come from somewhere. It's pretty much over between you and me, Doll.
No one can ever take away your achievements, however. And this doesn't make The Passion of the Christ retroactively anti-Jewish.
Once in a while, one has to distinguish between an artist's work and his ugliest thoughts. This is one of those times.

This is not a time to separate Mel's so-called art from his true self. Like his father, he is viciously anti Jewish, and anyone who spends a single penny seeing or renting his movies supports his views by putting money in his pocket. In one or two hundred years will come the time to consider whether his "achievements" should be separated from the evil hate-monger that he is. He's no different than the Muslim that gunned down Jewish women in Seatlle the other day. In fact, because of his appeal and world-wide popularity, he is more dangerous, and more evil.

By your logic there's no difference between me and Aileen Wuornos, because after all, I've become frustrated in my relationships with men and proclaimed that I hate 'em all.
I don't particularly care to put money in the pockets of Sean Penn and Tim Robbins, either. But if I boycotted the movies of all actors/producers whose personal views repulsed me, I'd never see another movie again in my life.

Aileen Wuornos was a psychopath, you are not. The difference between helping the income of someone with whom one disagrees and that of someone who spews race hate is considerable. Would you spend money to see a Tim Robbins movie if he was saying there had been no lychings in the South and things sure were better when Negroes sat in the back of the bus? Mel Gibson is not simply professing a political point of view. He hates Jews, and has, and will, use his talents and popularity to advance his cause. Decent people should not aid him with their box-office dollars.

I paid money to see a Spike Lee movie a few months ago, and he has said some flagrantly racist things.
I can't condone any of what he said, but he does have a reputation as a particularly ugly drunk. And, as one of my friends pointed out, he made a point of saying the most inappropriate things possible.
I take it you're one of those who were able to suss out some anti-Jewish sentiment in *Passion.* It wasn't there, SR.

I Hate It When Jews Riot, and Americans Threaten Newspaper Editors with Decapitation.
All I want is for the Islamic and Arab worlds to grow up and join the fucking club: everyone gets parodied by newspaper satirists. If you're offended by a picture of Mohammed wearing a turban shaped like a bomb, I hope you're yelling yourself hoarse exhorting fellow Muslims to stop setting the goddamned things off. Otherwise, you deserve no respect and dishonor your faith.
Via Tom Gross, who has more here.
Thanks to Yolanda over at this thread, for pointing me to the mother lode of anti-semitic material.

Yolande provided some excellent links in that thread.
Here's another extensive collection of equally nuanced, sophisticated cartoons.
Despite what some of the commenters in the previous thread suggested, it would be impossible to match the crudity and hatred of these cartoons in mainstream western media. If comparable material were published here it would be met with contempt and disgust, not riots and threats of bombings and beheadings.

Ethnicity and the Melting Pot
My cousin* Attila, the "Pillage Idiot," wrote an interesting
meditation on the unique relationship between Jews and America. I love it, and I think it has a lot to say, by extension, about other ethnic groups in their own relationships with this nation. We comprise the first nation to make equality an ideal and to push hard toward that ideal.
And that is what makes us the Shining City on the Hill.
* We're related by marriage. He's a Marylander Jew, and I'm Californian Anglo-Saxon/Native American trailor trash. But we both like to plunder and pillage, so we get along fine.

Now This Is Depressing.
Joe Gandelman
reports on young Britons who don't recognize the significance of the name
Auschwitz.
I once lived with a mathematician who had left academia to work in entertainment. Just as some in my family got interested in geneaology, a few in his family had as well. But it's different when Jews decide to put together their family histories: I have books and binders full of anecdotes about the Oregon trail, life in Nebraska. I have a folder on my husband's family with stories about Ireland (a land that has its own heartrending tragedies, of course), and migration to America. My former significant other's family history was page after page of "Name -- died at Aushwitz."
To hear that young people in any Western country are not really learning about the holocaust fills me with deep rage, partly because I think this failure of education helps to fuel the growing anti-Semitism in Europe. And partly because the story transcends ethnicity as a cautionary tale.
