The Plot Thickens.

I tried posting at my alternate blog on Blogger, and got this message:

"There were errors."

Asked for details, the helpful program told me this:

"001 java.io.IOException: EOF while reading from control connection".

But that didn't help me at all.

Thoughts?

Well, I've Checked My Settings.

I can't figure out what is causing MT to reject most of my entries that have any sort of substance.

And they're all sitting in an MS Word, file, man. Every word is a freakin' pearl. They'd bowl you over if you could read them.

I Might Even

. . . attempt

a posting

that's

a whopping

seven

lines

long.

What If

. . . I attempted

to post

something

that contained

six lines?

Would that work?

Okay.

I'll try this.

Let's see

if I can post

a five-line

post without getting an error message.

"Safari Can't Open the Page.

Safari can’t open the page “http://blog.mu.nu/cgi/mt.cgi” because it could not load any data from this location."

And it won't work in Explorer, either.

Very annoying.

Another Test Post

I wonder whether memory problems in my Mac might be related to my inablity to post anything over four lines. Anyone have any ideas about that? So far I've been very lucky in not needing to upgrade my memory, but I know with a Mac one always gets needs to upgrade, sooner or later.

Maybe This Will Be Good For My Writing

MT has decided I'm too wordy, and will only accept entries that are a few lines long.

This could be an opportunity to Become Concise. Or, perhaps, find out how far into the yard my computer would go if I threw it right through the freakin' window as hard as I could.

You Know, Traffic is Down.

How on earth do you expect me to post interesting things if you don't stop by?

Visit more often, and I'll post. It's only fair.

Test Post

Hm. Wonder what's going on, here. MT appears to have some sort of mental block.

And, you know—it's a lot younger than I am. Definitely on the other side of that 40-divide. So there's no real excuse for it.

Commenting Policies

From now on:

1) Name-calling is discouraged in all cases, but tolerated with respect to public figures. It is not to be used against other commenters, or your hostess. If you resort to this, I may change your comments to make you sound stupid. If that's, you know. If it's feasible. (Often, it simply isn't, and I just let the comment stand.)

2) If there's no chance that your words will edify others or persuade someone else to come around to your point of view, why bother?—you could be watching re-runs of Man from U.N.C.L.E.. Or doing drugs. Or working out a New York Times crossword.

3) Stick to one screen name here, particularly within a given comment thread. Of if you're going to pretend to be several different people, do try to make it convincing: misspell different words. Commit separate grammatical errors. Live it up and use paragraph breaks, even if that isn't normally your bag.

I want to believe.

4) If you're going to claim status as a Vietnam Vet, I want your branch of service, the years you served, your unit number, the tasks your group specialized in (tunnel rats? LRRP?), and the area(s) where you were deployed. Or, you know—I get to counter your arguments by claiming to be the reincarnation of Molly Kettle. This isn't a Monopoly game, and pretending to be a Vet isn't like drawing a get-out-of-jail-free card, releasing you from the normal rules of civilized discourse.

I'm starting to conclude that real 'Nam vets are far outnumbered by those who are "recovering memories" of their service therein. Matter of fact, I think I might have been there myself. I was eight years old at the time, but tough as nails. I killed a lot of VC, and now I'm plagued by guilt.

Thanks.

I'm Here, I'm in Arrears

Off to beddy-bye. Visit the Pirate early and often.

I'll be getting this place back to normal (whatever that means) over the next few days.

Don't eat any wooden pickles!

For the Next Several Days

"The Pirate" of Pirate's Blog will be sailing this website through the treacherous waters of Southern California's hot (and liberal) climate for the next four days. Hoist the black flag, and give him a warm welcome.

I'll be on the East Coast from tomorrow morning on, attending my sister's wedding and poking around in some of the state's eminent domain abuse cases (apparently, the ones in New London are only the beginning in that area). I'll check in now and then if I can find a cheap internet cafe. After all, I still have tons of Siggraph stories from the past few days that you people have to hear (or, possibly, skim over).

But now, I'm going to grab a few hours of sleep. Because I'm such stuff as dreams are made on, and so forth.

From the Mailbag

One of my readers writes to ask why I usually get men to guest-blog for me when I'm out of town.

Of course, I'm not so sure that's the case: I've only had two guest bloggers, Desert Cat and William Teach of Pirate's Cove. As a member of the Cotillion, I'm hardly ashamed of my femininity.

But variety is the spice of life, and I certainly try for people who have different "takes" or attitudes when I get someone to cover for me.

And there's nothing wrong at all with a shot of testosterone here and there to balance all my girly blogging.

Hope this helps.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

I'm now past the 100,000-hit mark. Very small change compared with some others, but satisfying nonetheless. (For instance, James Joyner took three months rather than two years to reach the same watermark. But I'm a boutique blog, and I'm happy.)

Links in my comments.

See if you can leave them now. If not, I'm going to have to call in the heavy artillery (people who know what they're doing with web pages).

Deadlines Beckon

. . . so it'll be light posting today. In the meantime, check out all the bitchin' sites on my blogroll (most of it's on the left sidebar, but the Watcher's Council members are listed on the right sidebar).

And, above all, be good.

50,000 Hits

This week. Probably within about 48 hours.

Not that, you know, I keep track.

I mean, this is art for art's sake; why on earth would I need an audience?

Now That I'm Over the Slump

I should point out that, as a mid-level blogger, I'm the perfect place to advertise if you're just starting out (or have a low-key blog you'd like to publicize more effectively).

I get a decent amount of traffic, which isn't just my core readership but a resonable number of heavy hitters who stop by on at least a weekly basis. (No, that doesn't include Glenn Reynolds, but you'd be surprised how well a person can do without getting any Instalanches whatsoever.)

I'm back up to 500+ hits a day, now that the post-election and holiday slumps are over with. I'm still small enough, however, for ads to be really cheap ($10-$20/month, depending on my stats at the exact moment you buy the ad).

Keep in mind that if you do want to run an ad, an image, photo, or icon (some kind of artwork, no matter how simple) will likely make it more effective. So try to have that ready when you get started. And I've been told that it's easier to find me in the Blogads system by going through my existing adstrips, rather than trying to find me on their site. (Go to the right-hand sidebar, and find "I've wanted to sell out all my life," or [further down] "Advertise here.")

We now return you to your regularly scheduled less-overt—understated—ad-whoring and link-whoring. Which means I can take off these fishnets and high heels, now, and get back into my corduroys. Yay!

Light Blogging, Next Five Days

Today I'm scrambling to wrap presents, do errands, and pack. Tomorrow my husband and I go out of town. We'll be back circa Monday. I will have my laptop with me, and I'm sure I'll post at least several times while I'm away.

In the meantime, get as much sunlight as you can, don't spend too much money, try not to overeat, and do not succomb to depression. It's a strange time of year: don't let it get to you.

Hugs your kids, kiss your spouse/sig other. Make the easiest thing for dinner that you can. People are much more important than things.
