Time to Nuke "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Alan Simpson shares his epiphany with the readers of WaPo.

My thinking shifted when I read that the military was firing translators because they are gay. According to the Government Accountability Office, more than 300 language experts have been fired under "don't ask, don't tell," including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. This when even Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently acknowledged the nation's "foreign language deficit" and how much our government needs Farsi and Arabic speakers. Is there a "straight" way to translate Arabic? Is there a "gay" Farsi? My God, we'd better start talking sense before it is too late. We need every able-bodied, smart patriot to help us win this war.

Via Ramesh Ponnuru, who points out that

At one point [. . .] Simpson seems to suggest that regarding homosexual sex as immoral is "completely out of the mainstream of American thinking," which seems false.

Yeah. On the other hand, I know both evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics with strong feelings about homosexuality being sinful: one Roman Catholic theologian I spoke with said the Church's stance was that a homosexual person was called to celibacy. The evengelicals seem divided on whether homosexuality is intrinsic, but do not seem to regard its expression as worse than any other form of sexual immorality, such as premarital sex. Both groups—the hard-core Catholics and the evangelicals—seem prepared to accept minority status in mainstream society, particularly when it comes of matters of human sexuality.

If the policy of the Armed Forces is going to be that we can't have people serving who are sinners, then our military readiness is about to sustain a very sharp drop.

So. Dead Soldiers.

Evil, stupid, or just misguided and broke?

Now This Is Politically Incorrect.

A pretty girl, some old vehicles, and morale-boosters for the troops. How fun. And it's tax-deductible! Get a headstart on next year's deductions.

Cool.

Now I can go get a copy of that Esquire issue, with Bryan Anderson on the cover. I just couldn't be sure that the article wasn't a slam on the Armed Forces. But I no longer care; what an extraordinary young man.

Cassandra's summary reminds me about Project Valor IT. Good thought: that organization has to be part of my spending plan for this coming year: better to read a few books from the library and send the extra to get laptops to injured heroes.

Merry Christmas, 101st. And thank you.

"Hadji Girl"

Buy it.

Regarding the Islamofascists: I'll be a lot more sensitive to their feelings when they stop trying to kill Americans, Jews, and other "infidels." That homicidal mania thing is grating, if you want to know the truth.

In the meantime, the money will make its way to members of the U.S.M.C. somehow, and that's all that matters.

Stand Up to HFM

One-stop shopping to protest the disgusting spectacle HFM has made of itself by stealing one of Michael Yon's photographs for the cover of Shock magazine.

The link includes: an online petition, ideas for pressuring the publishers of other HFM magazines (such as Woman's Day and Road and Track), a list of retailers that are carrying this pathetic attempt at a launch, and a list of executives within Hachette Filipacchi Media.

Three Years in Iraq

. . . have finally inflicted the level of casualties we sustained during the bloodiest month we were in Vietnam.

Which gives the lie to a lot of the comparisons between the two conflicts. Nonetheless, it's not a bad time to send a few bucks to your favorite Iraqi or Afghan charity, or your favorite military support group.

I like Soldiers' Angels, Marine Parents, Operation Iraqi Children, and Spirit of America.

If you have a favorite, leave it in the comments section.

Bookmarked.

Strategy Page's checklist for determining when we're getting ready to bomb Iran (despite its lower density of Brown People vs. neighboring states).

My favorite? Number 7, "increased delivery of Pizza to Pentagon."

Attention: Retired Military Personnel

Michael Yon is calling for volunteers to screen articles written by soldiers/Marines overseas (and presumably by airmen and sailors who have compelling stories that will not compromise operations in the telling).

The idea is to form a committee to fact-check this material, and verify that it's safe to share with Yon's massive readership.

As you know, the legacy media is not giving us a balanced view of our operations in Iraq (in particular), and in the past we've relied on the milbloggers for the real story. When Michael Yon began his online magazine, it filled the gap between unverified first-person stories and gloom/doom from the MSM.

If you have the background, and a little extra time, you can make a difference in this war by contributing to quality journalism that hasn't been filtered through the left-wing media.

Some Great New Dispatches

. . . over at Michael Yon's site, including an article about the Georgia National Guard, and Yon's piece on propaganda/information that really addressed that meme head-on—this is a must-read, of course.

Also, Yon is continuing to sell prints of his signature photograph, the one that portrays the rescue of a tiny Iraqi girl. I'm buying that and his book in March, as soon as my costs for the CPAC trip have been covered (my priorities now are to get out to Washington D.C. in February, and to expand my editing business so I can continue to cover events such as CPAC).

Battle Gossip and Gun Porn

Rusty has the scuttlebutt on tactics and tools in Iraq, some interesting tactical observations and reviews on firearms. (Teaser: the 9mm sidearm is not as popular as the .45. Can you believe it?)

Fun fact: Captured enemy have apparently marveled at the marksmanship of our guys and how hard they fight. They are apparently told in Jihad school that the Americans rely solely on technology, and can be easily beaten in close quarters combat for their lack of toughness. Let's just say they know better now.

Can Anyone Recommend

. . . a good book on tanks? I'd prefer an overview, but a WWII focus is fine.

Actually, same question on planes. I'd like to explore what gave us air superiority in the invasion on D-Day, but context/history is important.

Thanks! (I'm sorry: tanks!)
