Sure. The Magazine Won't Ship,

and the company will be out hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But Laura will be happy. So stay home if you're sick, even if you're under deadline!

The question of the day being: When does the American work ethic/way of doing business conflict with sound public health policy?

Seriously: I used to work for a company that had me shipping a "book" (a magazine) every two weeks. Getting sick wasn't an option. I used to keep a stash of cough syrup in my desk drawer, and I switched from coffee to tea-without-milk, so I could muddle through when I was sick. I had to be there.

And my mother the schoolteacher helpfully reminds me that in one's first 1-2 years in a public school, the human immune system is utterly overwhlemed, and one is sick half the time—or better.

So, teachers: stay home. The kids will entertain themselves, and your immune system won't get "over the hump."

But Laura will be happy. Has she never worked somewhere where she was actually, you know—necessary?

1 I worked in a private school cafeteria for two years, and missed exactly two days due to illness (both from food-borne illness contracted at restaurants). In my current job as a public school teacher, I have missed zero days so far (been working this job since August). In defense of your mother's claim, my students have pointed out that my class is the only one in which there has not been a sub this year.

2 Did you know the flu can kill? We're not talking "cold" or a little cough. We are talking the influenza virus. The flu kills thousands of elderly, young, and those with compromised immune systems each year. It is not an "inconvenience" if you bring it into work, the plane, and so on. Sort of like those people with tuberculosis who get on airplanes. They need to fly, afterall, and to hell with everyone else.

3 The flu kills thousands of elderly, young, and those with compromised immune systems each year. So do heat waves and cold fronts--also forces of nature that cannot be entirely controlled.

4 If you are too valuable to stay home sick, then you are way to valuable to fire because you stayed home because you were sick. STAY HOME IF YOU ARE SICK!
