Goldstein Excerpts Cheney's Latest Speech,

and comments on the Administration's rhetorical/informational offensive:

Clearly, the important administration arguments are beginning to coalesce: 1) Criticism of the war is not by itself unpatriotic 2) Similarly, answering anti-war critics is not challenging their patriotism 3) But opportunistic and cynical anti-war critics who are trying to walk back their own votes and level spurious charges at the Administration (they lied to take is into war) are themselves lying 4) These lies are hurting the country and the troops. 5) The burden of proof, in a post 911 world, was on Saddam Hussein to prove heÂ’d disarmed; we could not wait for the threat to become imminent before acting 6) The cause the troops are fighting for is just and right 7) Iraq is moving toward freedom; and things on the ground are improving daily, regardless of what the MSM and prominent Dems would have us believe.

These points, taken together, form an easy, concise, and—most importantly—a factually correct counter-narrative to the Dem / MSM narrative that has preached confusion, failure, quagmire, American criminality (torture, WP), and the relentlessness of an insurgency whose battleground savvy and knowledge of the Arab world are thwarting the plans of our confused military leaders and civilian war commanders. Oh. But we LOVE THE TROOPS!

The text of the speech is here, at the White House blog (you know: the one that won't call itself a blog). I'm reminded, by the way, of Ronald Reagan's habit, when he was thwarted by Congress and the media, of going "over the heads" of the legislators and reporters by speaking directly to the American people. This Administration has finally begun to do exactly that.

Free advice to the White House Press Office: break it up a little, okay? Throw in some personal anecdotes, the occasional cartoon, recipes, and pictures of cats. And don't be afraid to start a fight with another blog: your traffic will soar.

A General Announcement to My Liberal Friends

I mean, everyone fought hard and all that. And you'll probably always make more money than I do—not to mention being taller and less absent-minded. So you have that to keep.

But it's over. Karl Rove has a blog.

Nice while it all lasted, though. I'll send you a bottle of Dewar's; keep a stiff upper lip.

So . . .

Am I a "RINO"? Mostly I think I might be. But I despise John McCain as much as anyone out there.

Thoughts?

How Many Liberals

. . . have fled the Democratic party due to Cindy Sheehan's antics? And how many more are slowly letting go?

It Occurs to Me

. . . that I haven't pissed off my social conservative readers in a while. So, here goes.

I agree with the current meme to the effect that the circus surrounding Cindy Sheehan resembles the one that encircled Terri Schiavo. And that there were/are supporters of both the Schiavo parents and Ms. Sheehan taking the stance that "our emotion trumps your appeal to reason, so we are immune to any criticism. So shut the fuck up."

And that it's not very nice to put words into the mouths of those who cannot speak, whether it's because they are in a PVS or because they are dead. (Though in fairness, I'll admit that Terri Schiavo's wishes were far more ambiguous than Casey Sheehan's: the man made his desire to serve his country very, very clear. There is something especially unattractive about a woman infantalizing her adult son once he has died and cannot speak up to remind her that he is a man, not a boy.)

Chez Che

History's cutest murderer talks from the grave:

I also thank the useful idiots who opened the Dallas disco, Club Che. Promise me you will never serve a rum and Coke and call it a “Cuba Libre.” When you get a free moment, let’s talk. I think we need to open more clubs for hip young kids who got Ds in history. Club Hitler! Club Stalin! Club Mugabe! Club bin Laden! Okay, scratch that last one. We’ll never make money unless we can serve alcohol.

It's the beret, Baby.

Re: Nadagate

Goldstein did what no one else had thought to do: he interviewed Karl Rove's breakfast burrito.

Though, truth be told, I didn't realized people ate breakfast burritos on the East Coast. I figured that was for us Western folks who can handle beans and salsa at breakfast without getting all gassy. (My favorite breakfast: huevos rancheros. It's just slightly superior to eggs Benedict. Both come in ahead of a quiche wedge, which itself beats out a couple of muffins [winter] or a SlimFast [summer]. Those naturally those last two are my most common midweek options. Omelets are yummy, too. Now I'm hungry.)

I've Been Outed.

A friend of mine—let's call him Carl— has confirmed rumors to the effect that I'm white.

I'm afraid my life is in danger.

I mean, a lot of people have previously suspected I'm white. Just about everyone who's either met me or seen a picture pretty much knew the truth. But it had never been said out loud before Carl called me a "light-brunette Anglo-Saxon chick."

Actually, he didn't say that. Someone else referred to me as Anglo-Saxon, and Carl confirmed that he'd also heard that rumor.

But it doesn't matter, because before that it hadn't been said before. Well, except by my neighbors. And the rest of the population of La Canada, California. They knew. And they gossiped about it a bit, I guess.

Right. And anyone who read the official government documents (such as my birth certificate) that acknowledge my whiteness.

The fact is, until Carl confirmed that he'd also heard this rumor, no one else really knew for sure if I was white. Well, except for my friends and family.

Or anyone who read that article on the front page of the Valley Sun that featured a photo of my husband and me as "fair-haired people who sunburn easily." But at the time I certainly didn't think that identified us as white.

I perceive this as a plot against my husband, hatched by people who disagree with his heroic condemnation of the UCLA Bruins' defenses. And somehow those who are behind this conspiracy of bad sportsmanship keep harping on the fact that Attila the Hub went to USC, and that this might make him more critical of the Bruins' plays vs. the Trojans'.

I sit here blogging, waiting for death to overcome me in my suburban home. Death at the hands of UCLA football fans who have been waiting for public information about my caucasion heritage.

What is the football world coming to? What has happened to my little community in the foothills near Pasadena?

What is to be done?

How Annoying.

I was really enjoying my total dislike of Al Franken, but it appears that he's one of several people in the country who claim to "support the troops, but not the war"—and mean it.

Immoral Equivalence

The Anchoress on Richard Durbin's remarks, and how few Democrats are saying anything about them:

If Hillary Clinton does not have the moral compass to know that this is a time to break ranks with her party and come down on Durbin for his remarks, then no matter how much she purports to support the troops, she can never be their CIC. If her instincts, in this matter, are not fine-tuned enough to know what to say and how to say it, then how will she ever get a clue as to how to serve our nation or win a war on terrorism? If Hillary Clinton simply tries to duck and fade (with the assistance of the press) then there is simply no way she is demonstrating the leadership abilities necessary to govern a nation.

Disappointing to see that Joe Lieberman and Chuch Schumer had nothing to say about DurbinÂ’s remarks, either.

Hubert Humphrey would NEVER have stood for DurbinÂ’s remarks. Nor would either Jack or Bobby Kennedy. Or Scoop Jackson. They would have been the first to jump on him and demand his absolute retraction of those statements, and they would likely have told him to resign his leadership position while he was at it.

I mean, if you recallÂ…Trent Lott resigned his leadership position for much, much less. He resigned because heÂ’d been over-exuberant, spilling into offensiveness, when he wished a 100 year old man a Happy Birthday. And he resigned because his own party, the GOP was embarrassed, and had the sense to tell him to resign.

The Democrats canÂ’t do it.

Read the whole thing.
