Steyn on the Upside of Media Bias
In celebration of the StyenOnline's Third Anniversary, the site is highlighting classic Steyn articles from three years ago.
This one discusses the damage the media's leftward tilt does to the Democratic Party, via the occasional obsession with dividing politics into "women's issues" and (presumably) "real people's issues."
Enjoy.

One thing that the study does not do, which I would be interested to see, is control for the huge amount of inward EU investment in Ireland (that is, state subsidies) over the last 15 years. While I'm not claiming this invalidates their argument, a significant reason that Ireland has been able to maintain low taxation is because someone else (that is, the EU) has been picking up the bill for much of Ireland's infrastructure improvements.
Posted by: Christophe at November 27, 2005 02:33 PM (td8Qe)
2
1. GROWTH AND EU-SUBSIDIES.
The graph shown at
http://workforall.net/English/size_of_government.gif
clearly illustrates that Ireland's continuous wealth explosion has a neat starting point in 1985, and that this starting point coincides with the moment they reduced their tax burden.
The relation between EU subsidies and Ireland's explosive Growth is statistically insignificant.
Ireland benefited from European subsidies long before 1985, with no growth effect noticable at all.
Ireland's growth explosion continued its steady 5,6% pace when European subsidies dramatically were reduced, and the Irish boom continues even today (5% growth expected once again). The spread diagram between subsidies and growth consequently shows no relationship at all. Other regions such as Greece or Wallonia received comparable subsidies, but apparently could not use them for the benefit of their economies at all.
.
2. SCIENTIFIC PROOF.
The conclusion that big government harms growth and that high direct taxes on income and labour are the most distortive taxes (as opposed to consumption taxes) does not originate from single country comparisons, but from the scientific multiple regression analysis in which 17 European countries were involved. In this investigation WorkForAll examined 25 possible causes of growth differentials over an 18 year period. The regression model explains for over 93% of the growth differentials and left only 7% unexplained for. The conclusions are undisputeable and clear: "big government" is detrimental to growth, and "countries with a higher proportion of consumption taxes" have very significant higher growth rates.
Full report of the study can be read at:
http://workforall.net/Tax_policy_and_Growth_differentials_in_Europe.pdf
And the abstract at :
http://workforall.net/EN_Tax_policy_for_growth_and_jobs.html
.
3. THE CENTRAL POINT
The central point is do we choose for Irish policies which have proven realistic and successfull for over 20 years, or do we believe socialist dogma's and choose a Scandinavian nanny type of government that proved so catastrophic for both wealth and job creation, and robbed the individual from his dignity as a free and responsable being?
As anonymous posted here before: if we adopt a more Irish view, it is possible to create bigger wealth. More people become independent of government support. The Scandinavian model however, only redistributes wealth without any progress in society. In the long run, there will be equality, but it will more resemble equal poverty than equal wealth.

Actually, we don't all think 'fart' jokes are all that funny. We just don't want to be vulnerable to the indefensible charge of not being a 'real' man. It's just like big breasts. I've always found every part of a woman sexually arousing. Every line, every curve, every angle--and everything else that stimulates the other senses. Those that feel none of these things can only point to the most obvious difference between clothed men and women--breasts. And following that logic, 'big' must mean more sexy. I don't see it that way. But sometimes just saying "yeah" when someone points out big breasts is a lot easier. Also safer than questioning their manhood. I've always found it amusing that when I've told a small-breasted woman how sexy she was, she questioned mine.
And I never said that I didn't see those major motion pictures.
All this from snot....

. . . has the best
summary of the Althouse-Goldstein dustup, and the one that illuminates the most troubling aspects about this whole affair. Yes: too much electronic "ink" has been spilled over this. But I'm afraid Althouse's reputation has taken a hit. She does appear to be willing to distort the timetable in order to make anyone who blogs for Pajamas Media look bad.

Really, what IS Ann's point anyway? I mean Jeff G. has a famously thin skin, but this whole thing began with some pointless snark on her part, and her defenders have some pretty flimsy constructs they're leaning on.
She may have some valid concerns about Pajama Media and the direction it could take the blogosphere, but this kind of grade-school stick poking is doing nothing to advance whatever legitimate arguments she may have had.

When these Blogosphere 'spats' - or other issue-based controversies on the web - occur, it is great when a single blogger chooses to do a comprehensive entry, with a summary of the whole situation. (Then again, this can be difficult, because more activity in the dialogue/debate/flame war could occur, after that summary post is published.)
Incidentally, I actually came to this blog tonight (this morning!) to one of your entries from like February, because I was looking through the entries by bloggers that were about another controversy that arose in the Blogosphere, around that time. For some reason, I had missed that one (that's what happens when your both a full-time student and a CR Chairman, I guess), and it was informative, and somewhat entertaining, to read about it.
I was going to type here that I wasn't able to access that post by Patterico - but I just clicked again, and it is showing up. Perhaps it was an internet problem on my end.
By the way, I nominated his weblog last night/morning, for the "

Well, Rice has said that she won't run. Cheney and Jeb Bush are also in the fantasy list.
It's not an attack it's just the way things are.
Of course, Rice won overwhelmingly, as she does in every one of these polls.

Dear Pixy, If you can tell me how long Secretary of State gets to keep her job once she announces she will accept the will of the people and run for president, then you might have a clue why she is playing it straight that she is not RUNNING. She does not have to organize any national campaign until 2007 when all the other 30 or so Republicans and Democrats launch offically. Did Hillary announce? Did Newt? Did Rudy or McCain? None of them are admitting plans are being made for them to run as president in 2007, so why is everyone so upset that Condi said she is not running? Our political action committee has been flying and driving to political events for the past year, building a base of support which we call THE EISENHOWER PLAN, as in style of a draft movement. At the Wisconsin State Convention in May 2005, Condi was at 30% by the delegates, with Rudy and McCain at the back of the bus. A poll was taken in Iowa, with 400 likely Republican caucus voters, again, Condi was at 30%, top of the line with Rudy and McCain less than 20%, all others listed below 10% and even 5%. There is a clear honest effort by americansforrice.com to show Secretary of State Rice is the most qualified and the most knowledgeable of the White House plans. She has built relationships with other world leaders which will serve her well when she becomes President in 2009. Our group started early in order to build that base of support nationwide by the people, instead of being controlled by some DC consultant. We are the grassroots, and with over 4,000 of us on Team Condi, we will be setting up Condi Booths at many events in 2006 as well. We are not going away, we know Condi can not run for awhile yet, and we want her to remain at her job as Secretary of State. In fact, she is doing her job with class, dignity, and strength, like a Velvet Hammer.

You don't have to work so hard to convince me that Condi would make a good President, Crystal! I'm already sold.
I very much hope she does run, either for President or for VP, possibly with Giuliani. Just saying that I believe this is the reason Hugh lists her on the "fantasy" ticket.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at November 26, 2005 07:08 AM (QriEg)
4
By the way, I poked through the poll results, and as far as I can see there is no group that doesn't list Condi first. Giuliani comes second to various others for certain groups, but Condi is number one every time.
You can be that people will be paying attention to results like that.

Crystal is correct, Rice HAS to say she's not running, she has 3 years to go as Sec of State. I mean, she's not Hillary Clinton, lol. But she seems to be running, as per her recent domestic PR trip (not exactly in her job description), & her public appearances with NFL head Gene Washington on her arm (something Tammy Bruce predicted Condi would do if she was serious, since the public has a distrust of single women)

Oh, how interesting, BA! I'd been wondering when she was going to work on her heterosexual credentials.(Of course, Hillary hasn't started on that project yet.)
As for Condi's declaration that she won't run, she hasn't taken the "iron-clad" pledge ("if nominated I won't run; if elected, I will not serve"), so the door is still open to being drafted. (Eisenhower didn't take the pledge, either--but he didn't take the notion of being President seriously until Dewey defeated Taft.)
Rice is a private person, and probably has very mixed feelings about all this, but she'd be a fool not to keep her options open. I'm sure she's considering it all very carefully, and the paucity of other quality candidates (with the possible exception of Giuliani, who can't get the nomination) very likely matters a good deal.

Attlia Girl and Pixy are correct. The building support for Condi to be the Republican nominee is happening as we speak. The establishment RNC in Washington DC is behaving neutral right now, providing the discussion of 13 Republican men and Condi to be on the minds of the conservatives and the Republicans and even a Independents. During the past year, as Team Condi was flying and driving to event after event, the people got excited about the possible Condi 2008 efforts. Could it really happen? Are you serious? How can I help? These are the most asked questions and when they hear it is true and how they can donate to promote Condi for 2008, hundreds of people JUMP at the chance. Yes, there are 3 years left to go for Condi in her role as Secretary of State. I am going to do some research to find out how the previous 6 held their post while running for president. A few were promoted by the President they served under, so that cleared the field. Maybe after November 2006, we will see President Bush put his arm around Secretary Rice and tell the Republican party that she is HIS choice for president. Now that is my fantasy, and it is more realistic than Huge Hewitt ignoring us and our efforts. Yes, that is right folks, he totally ignored Team Condi in Las Vegas at the FreedomFest of the Young America Group. He was there with his radio show and refused to allow me to speak to his audience, that is rude in my book. I heard he did mention us once, as in the fact we had a booth there. But he failed to let the people know how many young college Republicans and young conservatives wanted bumper stickers and information about how they could help Condi in 2008. Oh dear, could it be that Hugh Hewitt is scared of us? Could it be that he already has his mind made up for a certain Republican to win in 2008 and refused to allow any debate on his radio program? He is acting like the liberal reporters at USA Today and the NY Times. What a shocking viewpoint, but I can only call it as I see it. Thanks Miss Attila for allowing me to speak up for Condi. And it is a JOY to read all the viewpoints on your blog. Keep up your efforts to bring your audience the real voices from real people.

I think it's briliant. They might have finally found a definition of abstinence that teenagers can actually follow.
Me, I'm more inclined to the "oral sex isn't really sex" version.

Hm. I don't know so much about the male experience, but I think I would have been better off waiting just a bit longer. The one thing I will insist on, however, is that "lack of birth control" not be the reason for abstaining. In other words, I'm likely to be the kind of mom who says "take a condom just in case."
Of course, I have a cousin who's the product of a bad marriage that came about after he was conceived.

Personally, I don't think that people are emotionally ready to have sex until their early 30s. (Don't tell my customers, though.)
But, yes, I'm with you that it is better to offer esteem-based rather than fear-based reasons not to have sex, because (as I clearly recall) teenagers are really not very good at putting behavior and consequences together.

Stop it!
Stop it right now!
We are at war both here and abroad.
No time for silliness.
No time for political maneuvering to get a leg up on the competition.
Try going six months without mentioning each other's names. Or even one.
All parties are wrong on this one.
Over the years, I've gotten a few offers. Job offers. Invitatations to join consulting groups. Party invitations. When I'm not interested, I send a polite note declining the offer and wishing them well. I do not publish a letter making fun of their names. "Open Sores Media. Swapping semen for pus, bodily fluids-wise." Then act offended when someone calls me on it. "It's just an oft-heard joke!" Yeah, in enemy camps. I do not publish personal communications, either--like the original offer. I also don't attack people that turn down my offers and maybe say some nasty things about me. "Sorry you feel that way" is all that's necessary then.
Drop it.
We all had 'friends,'
particularly at school, that decided to strike out on their own by using us as a stepping stone. Life goes on. Defend yourself by succeeding. Defend your actions by just addressing criticism without mentioning names.

I mostly agree with you, and I know that sometimes Goldstein feels he needs to defend himself unnecessarily, but Althouse is over the line on this one: she simply will not concede that she unfairly painted the PJM parade-livebloggers as callous/malicious.
In the original dispute between her and PJM/Goldstein, she had a point. In this latest incident, she doesn't, and it's clear that she's just being nasty toward anything/anyone related to PJM.
I'm afraid there are a lot of people out there who are used to being the smartest person in the room, and that doesn't work in the blogging world: it's a bigger pond than many are used to.

Well, I generally just pull the proportions of water, sugar and cranberries off of the cranberry bag (which I threw away, and you-know-who has already taken out the trash), but it's all pretty easy. Better Homes and Gardens uses these specific amounts:
Cranberry Sauce
I C sugar
2 C cranberries (8 ounces)
I C water
In a saucepan combine sugar and 1 C water. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Boil rapidly for five minutes. Add cranberries. Return to boiling; reduce heat. Boil gently over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes or till skins pop, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Serve warm or chilled with beef, pork, or poultry. Makes aobut 2 C, or eight 1/4-cup servings.
MOLDED CRAN SAUCE:
Prepare as above, except cook cranberry mixture for 13 to 16 minutes or till a drop gels on a cold plate. Pour into a 1 1/2-cup mold; chill till firm. Unmold.
I had so much trouble with this until my sister-in-law told me that they used to put the cranberry sauce outside in the snow the night before Thanksgiving. So that's what we do now: we put it "outside in the snow," but since we're in CA/AZ respectively, we really just sling it into the fridge.
Mr. Speaker, please note that the recipe specifies that this stuff can be served warm. I think we've all seen the canned stuff resorted to so often, we have a distorted picture of how "jelly-like" this stuff should be!
I'm actually a big fan of cranberry
relish, but not enough of one to justify the extra work. I like sauce just as much, and it's amazingly easy.

Yes. As of tomorrow, you can have all the cranberries you want. I actually don't mind the canned stuff for some applications, and it's often pretty cheap beginning on Thx + 1.

Well. I'm Definitely Sick.
It turns out that: housework + dust + meetings in hyperallergenic environments + seeing my mother when she has a cold + dry SoCal air + something dead under the house (that my husband cannot find, no matter how hard he looks) sending up a putrescent odor that increasingly pervades the living space
=
I have some sort of obnoxious virus. So, no Harry Potter movie today, but I did finish the Michael Connelly book.
And it looks like we'll have a bare-bones Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow, which is fine. I hate changing out of my pajamas on Thx day in any event.
I have a new business model, BTW: "Pajamas Cooks," a show for lazy people who like food. The twist is, instead of airing on HGTV it will be on the History Channel, since that's where the core audience is. It's aimed at those who want to make something really delicious—but quickly, before it's time to get back to their books and shows about guns (me), football (Attila the Hub), crime (me), or military history (both of us).
I envision it would have broad appeal to the "eccentric bookworm" demographic.

Hi. I Have a Sore Throat.
I'll be
here until further notice.
If I feel well enough tomorrow, I'll go to see the latest Harry Potter movie.
If I feel well enough the next day, I'll roast a small turkey.
In any event, blogging will be light until I'm good and darned ready to surface.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Mark Steyn on
politics and celebrity in the Golden State:
So now [Schwarzennegger's] being stalked by Warren Beatty. In the runup to election day, Beatty showed up everywhere Arnold did, as if he were the Actors' Equity-designated understudy for the role. If they're remaking 42nd Street, Arnold's Bebe Daniels and Warren's got the Ruby Keeler role as the plucky kid from the chorus who gets sent on stage with the stirring words, "You're going out there a youngster but you've got to come back a star!" Or in Warren's case: You're going out there a wrinkly woozy semi-has-been but you've got to come back a star!"
Will he do it? "I don't want to run for governor," he said the other day, making it sound like he's interested in the role but he won't audition. He's certainly in the right party: The Democrats have already taken on most of the characteristics of a bad Hollywood project—no ideas, script full of ancient cliches, but if you can get the right star to commit to it we just might make this thing fly. And, though he's never run for office before, Beatty has the crucial ingredient: name recognition. All over California, women are going: "Warren Beatty? Oh, yeah, right, now I remember. That guy I had sex with in the late '60s."
Read the whole thing, and thank me later.

Thank you, AG! I'm still wiping the tears.
The thing Arnold has over Shirley MacLaine's little bro is that he actually worked for everything his has. Inspite of the fact that many people hear "funny accent" and believe that means low IQ, Arnold is a very shrewd businessman. He also can take the lumps that were dished out by the CTA, Unions and state Socialists, learn from them, and move on.
Beatty was little more than a pretty, priapic shell. Looks like "shell" is all that's left.

That song wasn't about him.
Now, if the CA Republicans can just overcome their "Death Before Election Victory!" self-destructive tendencies. I mean, precisely how stupid does a political party have to be to take Gray Davis' advice on who to run against him?

Mark Steyn's on a short, short list of essayists who just about never miss. Hitchens, Krauthammer, and a few others are that good. Not many, though.
No, Christophe, that song isn't about Warren Beatty. But he probably
thought the song was about him. Which is kind of the point.

We like to call that "energizing the base."

Fake Eastern European accents are so enchanting.
I have to go now: I want to watch
Shampoo again, and verify that its premises about female sexuality are just a teensy bit male-stereotypical. But in that charming, sleazy 70s way.

Actually, Utron, the thing that amazes me about Steyn is his ability to keep utterly up-to-date on what's happening in the U.S., Canada, Britain, and the Continent
all at the same time.
An ex-boyfriend of mine used to refer to Isaac Asimov as "the Asimov brothers." I feel that way about Steyn.

Different Perspectives on Glasses
I must admit that all the fumbling around is inconvenient—particularly now that I'm in my 40s and have separate driving/computer vs. reading glasses.
But I love wearing glasses almost as much as Goldstein does. Both my pairs are unbelievably cute. In fact, even my supermarket sunglasses are unbelievably cute. Come to think of it, I'm pretty freaking unbelievably cute.
Of course, not everyone likes wearing glasses. Too bad, and somewhat incomprehensible to me. Of course, much of life is just like that.
I seem to remember waking up 20 years ago in a dorm room in Poughkeepsie to the exclamation, "look! It's snowing." So I looked.
And then I heard a somewhat wistful remark: "I wish I could do that."
"Do what?"
"Just look. Without having to do anything else."
Well. Now he can.

I like my glasses, which as opposed to being rimless are actually quite heavily rimmed. And I don't always need them, although they are helpful for making out, oh say...someone's facial features at 30 yards.
The only time I wear my glasses when I don't have to (like to the grocery store or walking the dog) is when I think they will cover another flaw I have going that day. Or if I'm just in the mood to look like a smart glasses-type girl.

I'm with the Wish I Could Just Look guy.
I was horribly nearsighted most of my life. Without glasses, legally blind.
That's why I got Lasik.
And despite some drawbacks, it was one of the happiest events of my life.
Seeing is good.

Right on target, Miss Attila. If anyone missed the CNN report about a national group supporting Condoleezza Rice for President in 2008, they can see it on our website, americansforrice.com, and see that we are being taken seriously. Also, on Saturday, Nov. 26, Good Morning America will be talking about us and featuring part of our TV ad which appeared on Commander in Chief in New Hampshire and Iowa. Thank you, Miss Attila, for being on top of the news.

Miss Attila, I have great news to share with you and your audience. The Washington Times has a story which Dr. Richard Mason posted and it is.......November 25, 2005: Black leaders in Florida switch to GOP. The Washington Times reported today that two prominent leaders of the NAACP in Florida, Darryl E. Rouson, a past president of the St. Petersburg NAACP, and Derrick Wallace, the current president of the Orange County NAACP have registered as Republicans in the past two months. Mr. Rouson, who said he learned that not one black circuit court judge had been appointed during 24 years of Democrats in the Florida governor's mansion, went on to make some rather candid observations:
"I saw that the mayor for eight years here in Pinellas County, who was a Democrat, had given only lip service to inner-city economic development,. The current Republican mayor, Rick Baker who was re-elected two weeks ago with 90 percent of the black vote, gave immediate attention to development and worked closely with black businessmen ....because we are 85 percent in one party, when Republicans are in power we are a beggar race, and when the Democrats are in power we are a beggar race, because they take us for granted."
Under the leadership of Ken Mehlman, RNC Chairman, the Republican party has been making a concerted effort to attract black leaders to the "Party of Lincoln." This summer he came to Florida as part of his "Give Us a Chance and We'll Give You a Choice" outreach tour with minorities.
PS from Crystal..many Republicans who are black, asian, and hispanic are finding economic hope and a better future with their membership in a OWNERSHIP SOCIETY, not a ME Victim group.
