Eeek!
Writer's group tonight, and I don't have a thing to
wear read.
I'm also scrambling on my volunteer/underpaid work for the nonprofit, and begin my bimonthly stint at the magazine tomorrow. All while other clients scream at me from the sidelines (including my father, who would like me to actually do the things he's paid me for; this seems a bit unreasonable, of course).
Blogging will be light, possibly until the end of time.

I'm Sorry.
But when a few drunks are trying to ruin your standup act—standup being one of the most difficult art forms there are—you are entitled to call them
anything you like.
If they can't take the heat, they oughtn't to have stepped into a kitchen infamous for its sauna-like atmosphere.
And how many times must I remind everyone that there is only one cure for the undue power people give the word "nigger"? Say it until it loses that power. Nigger, nigger, nigger. (And I am "trailer trash, BTW. And a "white mutt.")

You assume people are being intellectually honest about word-power to begin with, not using it as an excuse to get in a free shot, or get that "money for nuthin' stuff" we all are looking for.
Words aren't magic. They never were. Words never hurt me. They were either true or they weren't. The betrayal behind some words sometimes hurt me. But that is a personal story, and a hurt that could never be inflicted by a stranger.
This said, Michael Richards is still an idiot. He proved it by trying to drag all white people into his argument(offense) and defense, and tried to draw parallels between what he did and the fight against terrorism. Every comic knows to say "I don't bother you when you're working! Did I ever try to slap the cocks out of your mouth when you're trying to pay the rent? Do I tell them that the health department is looking for you?" Stick with the classics.

But no comic wants to used any other guy's lines. They are a lonely, independent, and generally hostile breed. The trick is to use one's twisted anger to make others laugh.
There is an art to using that twistedness to good effect: to channel one's assholism without truly BEING an asshole. That's why I prefer Jay Leno to David Letterman: I sense that he's a nice guy. He doesn't take the gloves off too often.
But I'll bet he did when he was working clubs. He had to, or he wouldn't have survived in that environment.

Michael Richards now OWNS "Shut up! Fifty years ago we’d have you upside down with a f**king fork up your ass,” that's for sure...
I agree with you in general, by the way. I don't know about any comic being a nice guy, though. They all teeter pretty close to the edge of sanity, Leno included. Ask any stand-up Leno worked with about getting through to him now. Or about his rivalry with Letterman. Nicer-than-Letterman isn't hard to do, I've been told.

I wouldn't know: Attila the Hub knew him in his own standup days, but it wouldn't occur to him to call Leno out of the blue. He generally lets other people call him--or if someone else needs to be called, he lets his agent handle it.

The Secret of the Universe
. . . has to do with making turkey stock. But you knew that deep down, right?
1) Let the carcass, some skin, and the giblets (minus the liver, of course) simmer for 12-24 hours with pieces of onion, carrot, and celery.
2) Add a little bit of sage and black pepper (it's too early to add salt; you don't know how much this stuff will reduce).
3) Throw in a slice of cooked bacon or ham.
Boil it on high for 20 minutes before you take it off the heat for good; better safe than sorry. Either make soup, or freeze it till you need it.

12-24 hours? And 20 minutes after that? I would think the simmering at ~200+degrees would take care of any bacteriological threat.
I think I found the source of that )0.7 degree global warming!!! Wait 'til the EU hits you with the carbon tax!!!!

Bring 'em on. I'll feed them a little of the soup I made from that badass stock, and they'll be begging for my advice on policy matters.
Strained out the meat and veggies, sauteed new veggies, added them in with some more turkey meat, and threw in some egg noodles.
Now I have plenty of stock and soup. I'm beginning to think I'll never have to open a can of chicken broth again!

I would say she was "wrong". The people that misused her work, pushing for a ban before the science was in-place, share her new title as one of the greatest mass murderers in human history--(a million and a half dead a year for 34 years, with many more blinded and otherwise disabled).
"There never was any scientific evidence that DDT posed a risk to humans or wildlife. An EPA administrative law judge said as much after seven months and 9,000 pages of testimony about DDT in 1972. DDT wasnÂ’t responsible for the decline in bald eagle populations, didnÂ’t cause bird egg shell-thinning and [...]didnÂ’t cause cancer in humans, the judge determined.
DDT was nonethless banned in the U.S. when then-EPA administrator William Ruckleshaus reversed without explanation the decision of the judge who actually heard all the DDT testimony – Ruckleshaus heard none of it and never read any of the transcript. As it was later revealed, Ruckleshaus was a member of the Audubon Society and raised money for the Environmental Defense Fund – the two activist groups that led the charge for the DDT ban.
The fix was in for DDT, as environmental activists subsequently exported the ban to the rest of the world – with horrific consequences, including tens of millions killed and billions made ill by malaria over time." DDT: A Weapon of Mass Survival http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,194332,00.html

A Nice Post-Thanksgiving Dinner, Indeed.
I stuck to the basics, and just roasted a small turkey. I bought the pumpkin pie.
There are still things I forget every year, such as: 1) wear supportive shoes, not just socks. Running around in the kitchen for four hours straight requires serious footwear. And: 2) remember to check the electric oven (yes, I know: ick), to make sure it isn't set to "broil."
I'm thinking of adding these notes to the turkey recipes in my cookbooks, so I can create institional memory on these matters, as well as on roasting times, good ways to adapt recipes, and the required temperature for "well-done."

I have no opinion, except to suggest that the more extensive one's "relationship toolkit," the less likely one is to get bored.
Much debate ensued among the Cotillion Ladies about how psychologically meaningful/maritally helpful such acts are. (The consensus: very meaningful, very helpful. And very, very good. I report, you decide.)

I was being kind.
There seems to be omissions in her data that lead me to suspect she has intentionally omitted all things that would weaken her case for gender-only discrimination. For example, she states that her predecessor in her first position at the firm was male, and that he made $20,000 (more) than she did. What were his "specifics"? For example, was he at the firm for 30 years? A lot of factors could justify the pay disparity. Her statement, "(t)he fact I built this place from scratch..." doesn't make sense(given that she talked about her predecessor)unless she provides a whole lot more information. She says "she's the boss now,..."CEO? COO? She has no power to block the board's unilateral decision? Odd, that. So is the part about that underling being paid more than her to start-- in an undefined capacity at the firm, yet. Hmmm. If you don't use the power you have, you lose the right to complain.
In the professions(medicine, science, and law), those possessing only x chromosomes earn, at minimum, 10% more than those contaminated with a y--other factors(ranking of college where degree was conferred, years of experience, etc.). The Ys understand that this has to do with supply and demand, meeting qualifications for federal funding, and other factors. It has been this way for at least 26 years.
In my experience, those with the highest salaries--male and female--are always those who who only stick around a short time before leaving for greener pastures. And before they are discovered. With each jump, they get a minimum 10% salary kicker whether they warrant it or not. I have never seen anyone who fits this description as being deserving. Those of us who stay for thirty years are given meager annual pay raises. Meager when compared to those who "churn" their careers.
If you want to be at the leading edge of salaries, you have to fight for it tooth and nail and play all the games(like getting competing job offers and being prepared to leave if the company doesn't counter-offer). If you don't, you'll have only the person in the mirror to blame. Or, maybe you have decided that other things are more important.

Do you move around a lot Darrell?
Or as you say "Those of us who stay for thirty years are given meager annual pay raises."
I thought Republicans believed in opportunity, and the pursuit of the Almighty.
And value competition. I am confused, are you a closet liberal, taking meager pay raises?

License to Kill
Desert Cat is
all over this one, of course. The elderly woman who was killed by the police might have been victim of "dynamic entry," rather than a "no knock" raid. I'm sure her loved ones are reassured by that fact.
Like most aspects of the "War on Drugs," this has to stop: innocent people are dying because a technique that should only be used on the most violent of criminals is turning into the "first resort," and there are virtually no safeguards in place. I'm furious. You should be, too.

Don't tell me that you are from the Peach State as well?
I am currently here, and because of certain future factors, I need to know as much as I can, about the political climate, and other aspects of life, about the GA county I'm in (about 2 hours or so from Atlanta), and about this state as a whole.
I remember seeing an item on the local news, a few days ago, about that 90+ old woman, so I am thinking that you may be from this area... I just sent an e-mail to Michael J. Canup, who I just learned, from going back to '
Save the GOP' today, that he is from here as well
. I sent Mr. Canup an e-mail, and cc'ed it to other conservative Georgia bloggers, such as Erick Erickson, Basil, Mr. Shamalama, and Gennie, about these issues. I didn't see your site, when I quickly looked through Gennie's GA blogring for sites I recognized, otherwise I would've cc'ed it to you as well.
If you are from Georgia, or know about it's political climate (as well as academic and job-related issues, and other aspects of life), I may need some information and advice, in the near future.
I hope your Thanksgiving weekend is going well! Keep up the good work here.

Hm. I Seem To Be Developing Narcolepsy.
But I'd rather have the door to sleep unlocked, versus locked—and a prison once I'm in it.
One of the officers on board the Titanic was asked how he could have slept through the hubbub that ensued when the ship hit the iceberg: "we don't get too much sleep," he replied. "So when we do sleep, we die."
These days I get drowsy, and it's delightful. I can nap at will, without fearing that I'll be out of commission for 18 hours—mostly.
