How about one about real science, without any agenda? And real scientists would have to organize it. The average American can't tell the difference because they have been inculcated with agenda-driven science since the first grade.

When I Plagiarize
. . . I certainly try to cover my tracks better than
this.
Maybe the page was set up by a Coast snob: "Wisconsin, Nebraska—what's the difference? All flyover country to me."
All I can think is that they were just copying this as a template, and they accidentally went live with a draft of the site. But you'd think they'd get someone to read it over first . . .

Breakin' Like the Fire at Malibu
Such a
tragedy. And it happens way too often: the 1978 fires earned a few pages in the 1979
Santa Monica High School yearbook. I watched the '93 blazes from my next-door neighbor's house back in West Los Angeles: a part of the Malibu Mafia from our Samohi days, he was able to tell me how close the fire had come to the homes of those we knew.
Does anyone know how Sandra Tsing Loh's father is? I don't think he was right on the beach. But I don't know the area well enough to be sure, and I no longer have her e-mail address. Someone get back to me on that.
I should have thought of this; it was so warm today, we had the windows open again. It seemed nice at the time. Fuck.

Okay. Traffic is Leveling Off.
Let's review the rules:

Sounds sensible.
That's how the Soviets ran their stores. If they were good customers and stopped by often enough, they gave them something to buy. Assuming they had anything, of course.

Holy Shit!
There are stem cells in
amniotic fluid:
Researchers at Wake Forest University and Harvard University reported the stem cells they drew from amniotic fluid donated by pregnant women hold much the same promise as embryonic stem cells.
They reported they were able to extract the stem cells without harm to mother or fetus and turn their discovery into several different tissue cell types, including brain, liver and bone.
"Our hope is that these cells will provide a valuable resource for tissue repair and for engineered organs as well," said Dr. Anthony Atala, head of Wake Forest's regenerative medicine institute and senior researcher on the project.
It took 'em seven years to figure out how to extract the cells, but it sounds promising.
As Glenn put it: "If this pans out, it will be bad news for politicians, but good news for the rest of us."

Bad news for politicians? Nah... we can afford to start engineering organs.
We can get the Scarecrow her brain, the Tinman his heart... and maybe the cowardly lion a set of balls.

You have to be more specific. Too many politicians fit those descriptions.
If they are like embryonic stem cells, we've just found an easier way to make tumors. About time!

It will be bad for liberal politicians, who back embryonic stem cells simply because it helps with their abortion on demand agenda.
Posted by: William Teach at January 08, 2007 06:18 PM (doAuV)
4
I'm not so sure about that: the embryos that get used for stem cell research are a drop in the bucket, compared to how many we destroy every year.
I don't see a real link, there. Abortion is driven by a cultural imperative.
Posted by: Attila Girl at January 08, 2007 06:45 PM (0CbUL)

True. Perhaps it is a bit too much of the talking points, but I just have to wonder why the Liberals have latched on to ESC's, while ignoring Adult and placental.
Hopefully, amniotic SC's will provide the promise that ESC's have, without the massive, prevelant tumors.
Posted by: William Teach at January 10, 2007 07:32 AM (doAuV)
6
They've latched on to ESCs in order to defeat Bush. The MSM has been conducting a disinformation campaign designed to paint Bush as an uncaring boob--one without compassion for the sick and suffering. Ever notice how they omit the word "adult" when they discuss stem cell successes? Know how many human trials with ESCs are in progress, or how many are awaiting launch? Zero. Do we need an endless supply of embryos if we are going to pursue ESC research. No. Any cell can be cultured indefinitely. If there were problems with how some SC lines were preserved, those lines could be discarded and others chosen to take their place. The only reason for unrestrained procurement is for patent purposes. It's easy to keep track of DNA if you are concerned about others staling your ideas. Are the Dems protecting Big Pharmaceuticals? Hardly. Just anti-Bush. And it's working! Funny how having the Press in your pocket can work wonders for propaganda purposes!
Excess body fat can be a source of adult stem cells. Any takers? Anyone see a plan coming together?

The Blond Bond
There's more to James Bond than haircolor and height.
Attila the Hub and I finally got around to seeing Casino Royale tonight, and it was wonderful: they are transforming the character of Bond back into a human being rather than a cartoon superhero.
"Craig's got an odd build," A the H points out.
"He's got an unfashionable build," I respond. "He's stockier than the previous Bonds have been, and he's got a tremendously muscular midsection."
"And a longer torso. He's not fat, though."
"No," I reply. "No fat at all. I checked."
It's not just the stunning body, though: Craig's acting is tremendous. As is the fact that he was asked to do it. I happen to be a fan of Timothy Dalton's and Pierce Brosnan's, but it's been a while since the Broccoli franchise has make that sort of demand on the Bond of the day. It was refreshing, and a treat.

Ugh. Potential GOP Nominees.
Please not
Romney.
I pretty much agree with Joyner, presuming Condi is serious about staying out of the fray: Guiliani's baggage is lightened by his performance in the aftermath of 9/11, but that won't make it go away completely.
Still, he's one of the few possibilities that I'm willing to vote for. As I've said many times, if it's McCain I'm not voting for President in '08. I won't do it.

I suppose it would depend on who is running on the Dem side. (As to whether I'd get out and vote for McCain or stay home.) I'd vote for him over Kerry or Gore, for instance.
But I would happily vote for Guiliani. Unless the Dems got a miraculous attack of sanity and put up Zell Miller (and he had a sudden attack of insanity and didn't refuse the nomination).

Well, Hillary might be tough in certain ways: after all, as a Dem and a woman, she'd have to come off as more of a hawk than she may want to be, deep down.
Or maybe I'm wrong. Remember the lamp-throwing? Maybe she's just looking for the chance to throw something at the Iranians.
I do not think a Hillary presidency would be "Bill, Part II."
Would I vote for her? Well . . . I'm sure not voting for McCain.

Excuse me.
Hillary threw a Lalique candy dish. And that's from Bob Woodward in that book of his about Hillary. So you know it must be true. The chronology of the story was--A disgruntled white house staffer who was p-o'd at being demoted told a member of the MSM that Hill threw an ashtray at Bill. Hill says question not worth responding to, feigns outrage for it having been asked. Later jokes that she threw a Mercedes at Bill. Woodward checks records, notes that WH files a notice to GSA indicating that a Lalique candy dish--a gift from a foreign dignitary during the Reagan years, was destroyed. End of case. To the common person, the Lalique candy dish looks a lot like an ashtray. But not at all like an AMG C36.
