Okay, One More Link
. . . before I publicly de-link and denounce Beautiful Atrocities forever and ever.
And it's only because he has the scoop: an interview with one of the 72 virgins. This is the first documented description of what conditions are like in Jihadi Heaven. (Apparently, it's bad, but it would be worse if so many Islamofascists weren't a bit light on their loafers.)
Okay. We now return you to your regularly scheduled hate.

Ah, Yes.
There are cultural minefields around the issue of GLBT blogs, aren't there? Take
the Weblog Award Nominations: There are the straight guys who will nominate others for fun, and the
gay homo guys who will do the same.
I should nominate myself. After all, I'm bisexual. The fact that I haven't acted on it since the mid 1980s is irrelevant. I'm sure I'd just kick the asses of Gay Patriot, Gay Orbit, BoiFromTroy, and Tammy Bruce.
So I'd better not enter; it just wouldn't be fair to the others.
It would be cool to find a nice TS/TV blog. After all, the bisexuals and transgendered individuals are just thrown into "LGBT" as a sort of afterthought. But I think there are stories to be told from the TS/TV crowd, and they should be heard.
Note to my SoCon readers: Please try not to freak out. Thanks.

Well, I nominated you, but you'll probably want to do one of those Wonkette/Washingtonienne posts to boost your chances.
For some reason the nominations are closed in the Humor category, which is too bad because I wanted to nominate Oliver Willis, who apparently thinks she doesn't qualify for the LGBT section

Patterico
. . . has the best
summary of the Althouse-Goldstein dustup, and the one that illuminates the most troubling aspects about this whole affair. Yes: too much electronic "ink" has been spilled over this. But I'm afraid Althouse's reputation has taken a hit. She does appear to be willing to distort the timetable in order to make anyone who blogs for Pajamas Media look bad.

Really, what IS Ann's point anyway? I mean Jeff G. has a famously thin skin, but this whole thing began with some pointless snark on her part, and her defenders have some pretty flimsy constructs they're leaning on.
She may have some valid concerns about Pajama Media and the direction it could take the blogosphere, but this kind of grade-school stick poking is doing nothing to advance whatever legitimate arguments she may have had.

When these Blogosphere 'spats' - or other issue-based controversies on the web - occur, it is great when a single blogger chooses to do a comprehensive entry, with a summary of the whole situation. (Then again, this can be difficult, because more activity in the dialogue/debate/flame war could occur, after that summary post is published.)
Incidentally, I actually came to this blog tonight (this morning!) to one of your entries from like February, because I was looking through the entries by bloggers that were about another controversy that arose in the Blogosphere, around that time. For some reason, I had missed that one (that's what happens when your both a full-time student and a CR Chairman, I guess), and it was informative, and somewhat entertaining, to read about it.
I was going to type here that I wasn't able to access that post by Patterico - but I just clicked again, and it is showing up. Perhaps it was an internet problem on my end.
By the way, I nominated his weblog last night/morning, for the "
Best Law Blog" category, in the annual Weblog Awards Contest. I hope he gets chosen for the ballot.

Stop it!
Stop it right now!
We are at war both here and abroad.
No time for silliness.
No time for political maneuvering to get a leg up on the competition.
Try going six months without mentioning each other's names. Or even one.
All parties are wrong on this one.
Over the years, I've gotten a few offers. Job offers. Invitatations to join consulting groups. Party invitations. When I'm not interested, I send a polite note declining the offer and wishing them well. I do not publish a letter making fun of their names. "Open Sores Media. Swapping semen for pus, bodily fluids-wise." Then act offended when someone calls me on it. "It's just an oft-heard joke!" Yeah, in enemy camps. I do not publish personal communications, either--like the original offer. I also don't attack people that turn down my offers and maybe say some nasty things about me. "Sorry you feel that way" is all that's necessary then.
Drop it.
We all had 'friends,'
particularly at school, that decided to strike out on their own by using us as a stepping stone. Life goes on. Defend yourself by succeeding. Defend your actions by just addressing criticism without mentioning names.

I mostly agree with you, and I know that sometimes Goldstein feels he needs to defend himself unnecessarily, but Althouse is over the line on this one: she simply will not concede that she unfairly painted the PJM parade-livebloggers as callous/malicious.
In the original dispute between her and PJM/Goldstein, she had a point. In this latest incident, she doesn't, and it's clear that she's just being nasty toward anything/anyone related to PJM.
I'm afraid there are a lot of people out there who are used to being the smartest person in the room, and that doesn't work in the blogging world: it's a bigger pond than many are used to.

The first time it happened is when I went to engineering school. Much to my amazement I found myself in the midst of people at least as smart as I was.
Again it has happened in the blogosphere. I'm just fair to middlin' here and not the exception as in the rest of the world.

At the moment, I'm thinking of having a big, dramatic end of my blogging career soon, but in my particular case I'd build up to a particular day—my "last day of blogging," and say my goodbyes at that time, and get all kinds of comments from people about how I shouldn't stop, etc etc.
The next day I'd start again just as usual.

It Is Amazing
. . . when bloggers
get together in real life. I know that's been one of the most enjoyable aspects about being in the Bear Flag League: the occasional chance to get together with—and work on special projects with—some of the sharpest writers on the internet.
And, no—after the first few moments at that initial brunch Justene organized in Marina del Rey (that five minutes wherein we were trying to figure out how this all works)—we've never been at a loss for words.
Of course, our spouses have to learn not just one name, but two names for everyone, so being the husband or wife of a blogger is double the challenge. But they all manage, somehow.

Michelle Has Had Enough
A
frank and courageous post by a woman who takes a lot of shit from racist liberals. I disagree with her a fair amount, but she's incredibly intelligent, and she works tirelessly, acting as a sort of right-wing informational clearinghouse. And in the areas where we disagree, she helps me to sharpen my thinking. Beyond that, of course, I get a lot of traffic just by virtue of being on her blogroll.
I wish people would leave everyone's families alone. I voted for Clinton in 1992, and I remember being thrilled that he and his wife leaned on the entertainment industry to keep Chelsea out of the spotlight. Was anyone ever so naive?—I truly thought that a precedent would be set, and First Families would at long last get some privacy.
Of course, when they left the White House, the leaning stopped—and it was open season on families once more. But by then I'd seen what was going on, and had started voting with the GOP.
Just from the shit I get here I can't even imagine what it would be like to be in Michelle's shoes. It really pisses people off when a woman is both attractive and intelligent. Particularly if she disagrees with them. (And, no—I will not break it down by gender: I've seen vicious/sexist stuff from men and women. There's always a temptation to think women will know better, but that only works when and if they want to.)
UPDATE: Audio of the straw that broke the camel's back, over at Ed Cone. I'm still amused at the idea that Malkin's husband writes her columns. He must, dammit! Chicks can't write!

The reason this woman was given crap had nothing to do with her race, but being a GOP sell-out to her race. DUH!, but I wouldn't figure a conservative would see it that way.
Take it from another smart attractive woman of a other than white race....the spin you and she put on this was far to obvious.
As a woman, regardless of your race, you too are a sellout...sending women back to the days of dark alleys, coat hangars and under a man's thumb.
Posted by: Ambriel at November 20, 2005 10:04 PM (k+Cwk)

I've never advocated dark alleys, coat hangers, OR being under a man's thumb. Have you, by the way, read one post of mine on the subject of abortion? How do you know what I think?
And if I've sold out, why didn't I ever get any money for it? I mean, I thought that was the whole point of selling out--getting a little dough-re-mi . . .?
And--DUH--what is it that you'd like Ms. Malkin to believe? What would be an acceptable philosophy for her to advocate? And how exactly is it, BTW, that she's making life more difficult for Filipinos? Just curious.

The reason this woman was given crap had nothing to do with her race, but being a GOP sell-out to her race.
Eh?
So the racial slurs had nothing to do with race, but were purely political?
In other words, it's okay to use racial slurs when your target is a conservative?
What you're saying, then, is it's not racism if a Democrat does it?
That is possibly the most mind-bogglingly hypocritical pile of bullshit I have ever heard since, oh, the last time I heard the same bullshit from another Democrat.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at November 20, 2005 11:31 PM (RbYVY)
4
See, Pixy--it isn't racism if you're only doing it to enforce the single permissible political philosophy for blacks/Latinos/women/Asians/etc.
If women and minorities would behave correctly--that is, vote Democratic and STFU about any libertarian thoughts they might have--there'd be no racist/sexist remarks.
So, you see, they aren't
really racist or sexist. The slurs are only being used to "encourage" the minority/female code of conduct promoted by their betters.

Still--if you've read some of the stuff they send, it's somewhat beyond the usual "slut," "whore" sorts of things. There's a lot of explicit material about just what sort of "whore"/"gook" she must be.
It's different from what I get in both quantity and quality. My hat goes off to her for putting up with it, in addition to everything else she does.

I'm the talk show host that alledgedly "broke the camel's back" on Friday. Before you all irrationally and falsely accuse anyone who dares ask a question of racism, sexism, and any other ism... get this straight: We had a good 20 minute segment with Michelle Malkin. I decided I wouldn't be doing my job if I IGNORED what was out here in the blogosphere. She answered my non-accusatory mentioning of the fact that some websites had alledged her husband had been writing her material very well, with passion. Surely you must realize that many things not reported by the mainstream media, including plaguerism by famous people... have been first reported by bloggers. Why should Michelle Malkin not be subject to the same kind of questioning other major media figures must endure?
I truly thought we'd had a good segment with her, spirited and questioning of her thesis that liberals are, by defintion, uglier and nastier than conservatives, and less tolerant too. I never mentioned her husband by name, nor brought up his religion (I am Jewish too, and have absolutely no reason to go there....) or "attacked" him.
No one has an inherent right to not squirm a bit when they go on a talk show; Michelle was treated absolutely with courtesy and fairness.
She got her message out loud and clear to the listeners; that she would later that day attack me in print is just plain bad manners.
She said on the air she was glad I asked the question. Apparently that was somewhat less than truthful.
Posted by: brad krantz at November 21, 2005 02:48 PM (NNq8x)

Brad, thanks for posting. I don't think your question itself was out of place, but the claims of Michelle's enemies - let's call them what they are - that underlie the question certainly are.
Every so often I get a reader who thinks that I am female and conservative, when I am neither, and the attacks I sometimes get are utterly vile. (I've had three such attacks, all from the same person, since yesterday, but that's unusual.)
Michelle gets that every single day, with racial slurs to top it off. Still she should distinguish between your question and the baseless accusations that you asked about.
Posted by: Pixy Misa at November 21, 2005 05:12 PM (RbYVY)
10
Brad, thanks for sharing your feelings with us. I don't think it was at all out of place that you asked about the issue. I
do feel that the original question has a sexist/racist assumption at its core.
I agree with Pixy: your question was fair enough. You would have been remiss not to ask it, if the issue was being discussed over the web.
