My Experiments
. . . with pumpkin pie for breakfast make me loathe to recommend it as a weight loss regimen.
However, my body is just singing with beta carotene, so I've got that going for me.

Rush Is . . . Well, Wrong.
What do you call a blogwar that
erupts onto the public airwaves? A multimedia police action?
Glenn stated that the GOP deserved the drubbing they may well get in the midterms; he didn't say that the American people deserved the policy consequences if it happened. Fact: the party leadership—including The Mediocre Communicator in the White House—haven't earned much trust. They'd be in hot water if they weren't up against the Democrats.

Have your words filtered by 36 broadcast and cable networks and hundreds of newspapers and news aggregators 24/7 for six years and see how effective a communicator you'll become.
Analogy: A number of the clergy and religious have done a poor or mediocre job over the years so we'll turn the whole thing over to Satan.
Analogy II: Cut off your nose to spite your face.
Glenn's first point why the Repubs should lose--Terri Schiavo? If the President hadn't acted--hadn't tried to save a woman, with a normal life expectancy, sentenced to death by starvation and dehydration by a blind, probate court judge in Florida who admitted having based his decision of truth-finding on faulty information(that Karen Ann Quinlan was already dead when a co-worker told a joke about her being New Jersey's State Vegetable), I would have lost all respect for him. The only mistake made was not sending Federal troops to bring Terri to Washington to enforce the Congressional subpoenas. Federalism in action. Not sending those troops shows belief in limited Federal powers and trust in the legislation enacted to give the case a fresh look--which was ignored by a Clinton-appointed judge.
If you are displeased with the Repubs in power, put more conservative--or at least more effective Repubs in power in the future. Otherwise you will see Osama Bin Laden get 24 months in jail should he ever be captured.

1) But Reagan went over the media's heads sometimes and spoke directly to the people. And he did it well. Bush doesn't do that.
2) If the GOP is going to take a loss, now is the time--not 2008.
3) To what degree was the passion about the Terri Schiavo situation a reflection of repressed rage and frustration over the abortion issue?

"...They'd be in hot water if they weren't up against the Democrats."
News flash: They *are* up against the Democrats. That is
all the guidance I require.
In my opinion, one of the reasons that many adolescents
have such a difficult time is that immaturity leads them to
reject a situation they don't like in favor of a situation that
becomes (much) worse than what they rejected.
I hope that conservative voters are more mature than that.

But the media wasn't in full-blown "leftist mode" during Reagan's time. That didn't start until 1991-92 by my reckoning. There was at least the appearance of objectivity. Bush loves to avoid public arguments because of his personal theory that people stop listening and stop caring who is wrong or right--they just want the people in power to go away(they know the press can't be "voted out of office.")
2)The people that vote our way most of the time are better than Dems who won't vote our way ANY of the time. There are too many critical issues at play to sit this one out--Supreme Court Justices, Global Warming(Bullshit carbon credits with the potential of lowering temperature a fraction of a degree C at the cost of TRILLIONS of $$$$), tax increases(cut rollbacks), $5/gal gas that will never go away, etc., etc...
I'll set up a "gauntlet" after the election where you can paddle their asses to make your point. Feel free to use an oar!
3) Well, abortion is part of the Culture of Death and minimizing and devaluing human life. Deciding whose life is worth living is a key element of Socialized medicine. Feeding tubes are considered "extraordinary measures" in most European countries with a national healthcare system. The media must share blame for Terri's execution because polls showed that more than 60% of the people thought this was a case of machines keeping a person alive. If your job is to inform and educate, that fact alone shows you're not doing your job. How many people knew that Terri had a normal life expectancy? How many people knew that she was sentenced to be put to death by a probate court judge. How many people knew that the facts of the case had never been re-examined(you only get one bite of the apple in a minor legal case--subsequent appeals never re-visit the original fact finding). How many people knew that Terri had NONE of the protections given to citizens in a capital case(where the death penalty is on the table)? The autopsy showed those bastards didn't even give her morphine in her final days--Tylenol was the only drug in her system.

Let me stress that it will take several successful test explosions to convince me that North Korea really has workable nukes. Say six or eight. Anything less could be a fluke.
Absolutely. There are no nukes in North Korea unless there have been at least half a dozen tests of nuclear devices.

About 20+ years ago, a PHD student in nuclear physics assembled open literature data on how to produce an atomic bomb. The information was so accurate that his doctoral thesis was labled top secret, eyes-only. Do you really want to bet that North Korea hasn't taken advantage of the open source literature, Pakistani colaboration, and something interesting from the Chinese? My real concern is not a fission device of relatively low yield but a fusion device in the 10s of kiloton range. it is good to be skeptical but it is also good to have a sense of the science and politics behind nuclear power and explosives.

American Mourning
. . . continues to rise in the
Amazon rankings. This book contrasts Cindy Sheehan's response to her son's death to that of another couple that lost its son Justin (incidentally, Casey Sheehan's best friend) a week after Casey's death.
Insted of becoming peace activists, Justin's family supported our efforts in the War on Terror all the more. His father went so far as to re-enlist in the Army at the age of 43, going off to Iraq to kill the Islamic extremists responsible for his son's death.

The Gospel of Mark
What a gallop through the life of Christ.
This is rather a weird thought, because despite being fully man, Jesus was also fully God. However, He was fully man, and I find myself thinking, "hey, this guy was one mature dude. I mean, his act was tight. He had it together."
Or as Frederick Buechner once put it: "when we say that people are 'with it,' the 'it' they are with is God."*
* From memory, so it might be a slight paraphrase.

I find Mark reads like a rough draft of Matthew and Luke. Beyond that I classify Mark, Matthew & Luke as the "Sportscenter Gospels" because they are the highlights of Jesus' top Plays. Meanwhile I file John as the "Lifetime Gospel" because its far more interested in capturing every detail of the stories it tells.

There's a reason Mark reads like a "rough draft" of Mt and Lk.

Of course, to me it seems more like an outline.
This is my first time all the way through the gospels in a few years, I'm embarrassed to say. I really dug Matthew, because of its completeness and its rigor.

Yeah, outline is a better term to use.
I haven't read them through in quite a few years, but read them a ton thanks to the Jesuits...
I find John the most interesting just cause its so different from the other three.

You Know . . .
I'm pretty damned happy right now. This despite the fact that I only have two weeks to finish the manuscript in: I've told my husband I'll be printing out my rough draft for his review on November first. (He gets the "dirty" version—the one that has all my notes to myself in each chapter file about things I'd like to check on, transitions I intend to tweak, and the like.)
What one cannot do: let the whiny voice win. That's the one in the back of one's brain that says, "awww, I don't want to work on that scene." Of course I want to. I just may not want my writing teacher to read it quite yet.

I Lost My Virginity in the Bob Hymers Cult
I was fourteen years old, and I was tiny. My boyfriend was a tall guy who had no problem forcing himself on me. I never used the word "rape" when I described the event. Rather, I called it "forced sex."
R.L. Hymers and the cult elders called it "sexual sin." I received no counseling. After that incident I lived my life in that "church" under a cloud. On the other hand, I wasn't murdered for dishonoring the "church," so there is a distinction to be drawn between the Hymerites and radical Islamists.

At Writer's Group
The Knitting Mafia is there, which isn't unusual. So the subject of yarn crafts comes up, as it does every now and then.
I point out that I could knit fine as a child, but my stitches were very uneven; they varied with my mood.
"Don't knit when you're angry," one woman tells me.
"And don't knit when you've had wine," another one adds.
When, then, can one knit? I'm angry 90% of the time; the other 10%, I've had wine.

Last name starts with H from Indiana, let me guess hmmm. I just saw this! I think you guys are right, I am some what of a threat, but not to Attila the individual. You are all being threatened by my ideas. By logic and reason and simple facts. Now here is what I see, if you want me to stop posting here all you have to do is ASK. But you won't because you want to Appear to be a champion of free speach. In actuality, you all would like me to take my contribution, and contribute elsewhere. It bothers you that someone with limited reading skills, english as a second language, coming from a third world country, might have more to contribute to your culture and to your country. Perhaps you are ashamed, that I challenge you on your knowledge, your low standards, your lack of simple human decency and etiquette. But I think I have made a difference to you all. I have made you look inside and perhaps next time when you will discriminate on the basis of religion or culture or race, you will think about me. We have established a relationship, an adversarial one unfortunately, but nonetheless a relationship.
What I have learned in the process, is that human beings can always strive for something better. You can put a sack of potato in the dark and it will try to shoot its roots towards the light. What I have learned about myself,is that in America, there are a lot of opportunities, but also the people here will say one thing and practice and think another. You want free speach, but only to say what you want. When someone says something you do not like, you would rather have them shut up, then to think about what is being said. It makes it hard to be heard, when people are sitting with their fingers in the ears. Yelling Not listening!
I know that for some of you this is your livelyhood, and by posting ideas contrary to your ideology I may be costing you your job. I appologize for that. But maybe attila can get her funding from the other party after Nov 7. You can use me as a reference. And Darrell, well you can always go on the injury list and collect those insurance dollars.
Cheers,

So I thought I should vote for them, but then that would be illegal, and I can't really afford to do that.
I do intend to join the Republican party, and bring all my indian and pakistani friends to the convention. That is the only way we can get rid of the racist language in this party, see we got to participate and remind those leaders who use inappropriate language, how else would they know.

I Just Re-Counted.
I had a few duplicate chapters in the "Draft One" folder. But I still have 160 pages in there, which isn't too bad. I'm probably 60-80 pages away from the finish line. First mysteries tend to be slender, after all. Twenty-two days left until I pronounce the first draft complete and set this puppy aside for a month or so while my "beta-testers" mark it up. That's 2.7 pages a day, if my calculations are correct about the finished length of Draft One. And I'm writing every day.
The rule is: some of it should suck—hard. Or I'm overediting as I go. That would really suck.

In My Twelve-Step Group
. . . we have speakers in to talk about how they got their businesses to grow (I'm in the money fellowship, so it's not as crazy as it sounds). Afterward, there's a question-and-answer session for ten minutes. During this time someone invariably asks the speaker "what are your daily spiritual practices?"
Standard answers: prayer, meditation, spiritual readings.
Next time I speak at that meeting I'm going to answer, "every day I read the Bible, and Ellery Queen."

Nine years ago, I finally admitted that I was obsessive/compulsive. So I decided to do something about it.
1. I stopped going to twelve step meetings.
2. I made a conscious decision to become obsessive/compulsive about getting rich.
I started buying assets that put money in my bank account
instead of what I used to think were assets, but took money
out of my bank account. Later, I sold most of those in
order acquire better ones.
That's my advice, and I'm sticking to it.

Oops, I left out the spiritual advice.
1. _Thanks giving_
Lots of giving thanks. Not so much because the Higher Power needs it (would
any self-respecting Higher Power need anything from _me_?),
but because I *really* needed to learn gratitude.
2. Forgiveness. My rational is that if I expect to be
forgiven, I should forgive.

Over the weekend, a significant and disturbing amount of traffic came to my site from somebody searching Google for "Jeff Harrell" and "mental illness."
THIS IS NOT HELPING ME DEAL WITH MY PARANOIA, PEOPLE.

You Know What's Terrific About Middle Age?
I will tell you: never knowing, when you use an extremity—an arm, say, or a foot—when you will strain some muscle or tendon and be in pain for a week for seemingly no reason.
I ought to find a yoga studio, while I still have a teensy bit of flexibility left.
It's not so much the level of suckage now, but rather fear of how bad it could get, given that I'm planning on living until I'm 105. (Now that I come to think about it, I may want to revise that number downward.) I just hope the painkillers will be plentiful and plenty butch by that point.

No, but keep trying. Someday someone will take pity on you, and you'll learn what all the fuss is about.

Phtt! Medical science better stay one step ahead of me. I plan to join you in living to 105, unless the world falls to bits before then.
