More Rumors of a Thompson Run

Hackbarth has the scoop, but correctly points out that we can't really regard Thompson as serious until/unless we see him raising funds.

Likewise, I won't see Gingrich as serious until he announces: he does seem to be enjoying his current role too much to demote himself to mere candidate status.

One of the most fascinating things about Thompson-mania is the fact that he appears to draw more from Giuliani's supporters than from Romney's; most analysts predicted he'd "take" more support from Romney fans. One possible explanation: people who consider electability to be a serious prerequisite—as I do—will find themselves more drawn to Rudy and Fred. Please don't get me wrong: I heard Romney speak at CPAC, and he did fine. I met him. I think he'd be a competent candidate.

But if star power and serious charisma are on-offer, from either Giuliani or Thompson, we do well to consider them an asset, along with the other factors we look at.

Because in the real world, that matters. Very much.

1 I saw Mitt Romney when he was in San Diego about 6 weeks ago - I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing a viable candidate. (I would vote for him over Hillary or Barack, but I don't get that "lovin'feelin'" Call me cynical, but I am skeptical of a ANY truly conservative candidate who had to turn themselves into a human pretzel to get elected in Massachusetts. Talk about a guy who tells you what you want to hear! I could enthusiastically support Rudy or Fred - I know where they both stand on national security (I agree wholeheartedly with them on THAT issue). Any other issue we might disagree on, I will respectfully agree to disagree. Since I don't agree with anyone 100% of the time (not even Mr. Aphrodite) I don't see that as "selling out" conservative values.

2 Judging by USA Today's most recent poll Thompson couldn't take much support from Romney because he didn't have much to begin with. Romney's starting to look like the Phil Gramm of 2008, all money no support.
