Over at The Oil Drum,

a nice essay on the history of oil in Alaska—and a reminder that even if we can buy time by utilizing fossil fuels from ANWR, the Gulf, and both coasts—and we must—it's important to move forward with alternative energy sources and alternative liquid fuels.

And there is, indeed, a "gold rush" going on with respect to alternative fuel/energy. The difference is that prospectors in California, Alaska, and the Yukon were not taking concrete steps to improve their country's security and the environment.

Those who are shaping America's energy future are. Yet they will get even richer than the most successful gold miners ever did.

1 I just love this alternate fuel/clean energy "religion" that is spreading over the world. I sense an opportunity to make a huge sum of money in the next 5 or so years. We are witnessing the latest craze, following closely on the heals of 1) How to make lots of money in real estate, 2) How to make tons of money in nanotech, and 3) how to make barrels of money on the fiber optic/dot com revolution. I have been involved in solar energy projects over the last 25 years, including a failed effort at Standard Oil of Ohio on thin film photovoltaic ("solar cell") research (prompted by the oil embargo of the 70's). And I just got back from Solar Power 08 in San Diego seeing this frenzy starting all over again.. I happen to have technology that the photovoltaic manufacturing industry can use. So I will make my fortune. But I can't wait to see the look on people's faces when they get the real bill for solar cells, wind power and bio fuels. Not the tax payer subsidized one that everyone is looking at getting. The proverbial dung is already hitting the fan as we speak with the corn-ethanol "miracle". Lets just face it: Coal and Oil are the most concentrated fuels we have. That's why they work so well. They contain the stored energy of the sun collected over thousands of years. They are, in essence, a gift from nature. With the exception of nuclear, most of these alternate energy sources will prove to be wishful thinking. Of course, we are always free to ride horses and walk a lot in the future. That truly is a "green" economy. Just remember what the streets of NYC looked like at the turn of the century. Lots and lots of manure. Check it out, lol.
