UPDATE: Has anyone else ever noticed that substituting a hyphen for the equal sign in the html for a link is completely ineffective?

2 I'd say it's high time someone write a "tagchecker" program, similar to spellchecker--it could highlight broken tags or unrecognized html with wavy green or red lines, similar to the spelling and grammar check in Word. Or for more serious html, (like fiddling with a template), one could click on a starting tag, and the program would highlight everything up to the corresponding closing tag, for example--sort of like Excel does when you click on the components of a formula.
